Daisy Cake

Here is the cake we made today in class. We had leeway to do whatever colors, daisy arranging we chose. I really am enjoying fondant more and more. It's a lot of fun to play with.

Marble cake base, streamers, daisies... woohoo.

Fondant & Gumpaste - Cake 1

Tonight was the start of my Fondant & Gumpaste classes. (I played hooky last week for the Course 3 finale after my cakes fell apart and need to do a makeup for that, so two-tier cake is yet to come.) I'm liking fondant more and more...
Today's cake we learned draping techniques, marbleizing...
A fantasy flower. I sorta think it looks like a peony, my favorite!

So there you have it!

First Fondant Cake

This is my first ever fondant cake. It was a *lot* of fun to make but...I don't really get fondant. As cool as it is on a cake {although I've always preferred the look of a nice fluffy frosting myself} it tastes like it has paint thinner in it...
You have to saw through the fondant to cut it...
Most people just peel it off instead of eating it with the cake {isn't that just a waste?)...
Because most people don't like to have to chew their frosting that thoroughly.
But, like I said it was a lot of fun, and really good to learn.

Cheers!

Course 2 Finale

Tonite we assembled our Course 2 grand finale cake. To prepare, over the last three weeks we've been making royal icing flowers.

Here's my Victorian roses & rosebuds:We also learned daffodils, pansies, apple blossoms, mums, primroses, violets, violet leaves, daisies, and bachelor buttons.
For a 3D effect on our cake, we made color flow pieces. Butterfly wings and fences!
Iced cake, basket weave on the sides. Rope border on the top, swirl border on bottom. Then we added a buttercream lily of the valley.
And after adding my color flow pieces and royal icing flowers -here's the finished cake!

On to Course 3!

{ Easter Cake! }

Today I did my very first basketweave cake! The top is sorta meh, but I was happy enough with the basketweave and rope borders.

Had some trouble with the word "Easter". Did drop flowers. Interesting colors, are they not?
It wasn't a *perfect* basketweave, but it was pretty good for my first try. My wrist hurt so bad by the time I was done piping...

Happy Easter!

Flowers

I started Course 2 this week! Much to my delight, we're only making 1 cake this course. {I love making cakes but getting ready for A Paris Street Market means it's nice to take it easy this month!}

This week we learned how to pipe new borders - swirly shells, rosettes, etc. And we learned how to make royal icing, mums, and rosebuds. Yes, we piped those flowers!

I love making all sorts of things, but sugar is a great medium to work with, one of my favorites for sure.

I'm very excited to complete this Course 2 cake... it's going to be FAB!
